Course Outline: Microsoft Excel Tutorial – Disc 1

Disc 1 - Chapter 1: Introduction

  1. Getting Started - The Getting Started section is fairly short and gives a description of what Microsoft Excel is and what you can use it for. This section also teaches you how to open the program.
  2. Windows - In this video you will learn about the basic interface features of Microsoft Excel. Some of the basic interface features in this section are the program window, document windows, and the Title Bar. This tutorial shows you where the Title Bar is located and how you can manipulate the Microsoft Excel window with the minimize, maximize and close buttons.
  3. Menus - Here you will learn how to access and use the menus along with what each menu on the Menu Bar includes.
  4. Toolbars - The Toolbars section goes over the different toolbars and the commands on them. This section also teaches you how to put different buttons or take away buttons on the toolbars.
  5. Formula Bar - This video teaches you about the Formula Bar and its use. The Formula Bar is one of the most important features to know about and use in Microsoft Excel.
  6. Scroll Bars - In this section you will learn where the scroll bars are in Microsoft Excel and how you can use them to navigate through the window.
  7. Worksheet Tabs - In the Worksheet Tabs section you will learn where the worksheet tabs are located, how to add more worksheets and how to rename and move the worksheets.
  8. Status Bar - This section explains where the status bar is and what information it displays that is relevant to what you are working on in Microsoft Excel.
  9. Task Panes - Here you will learn about the task pane of Microsoft Excel and how it has changed from previous versions of Excel. You will also learn how you can move and dock your task pane.
  10. Interface Review - This video lists each thing you have learned so far in Microsoft Excel and points out where each is located in the Excel window.
  11. Workbooks and Worksheets - This section gives an example workbook and worksheets for you to follow along with. You will learn more information about how you can organize workbooks into worksheets.
  12. Managing Workbooks - This section goes over the different commands for creating a new workbook along with how to save your work or spreadsheets in Excel. After learning how to save or save as you will then learn how to open files that you have previously saved.
  13. Getting Help - Here you will see how you can use the Help menu and Office Assistant to get help with something when using Microsoft Excel.
  14. File Recovery - Sometimes in Microsoft Excel you will experience a crash or freeze when you haven't saved. Don't worry, this section teaches you how you can use the File Recovery to recover an application that you haven't saved.

  1. Selecting and Navigating Cells - This lesson shows you how to navigate through the worksheet using the mouse and the keyboard.
  2. Entering Data - In this section you will learn how to enter data. Microsoft Excel allows you to enter many different forms of data including text, numbers, dates, times and much more.
  3. Edit Data - In the Edit Data section you will learn how to edit and change the data in the cells of the worksheet.
  4. Cut, Copy & Paste - Here you will learn how you can re-locate data in the worksheet of Microsoft Excel by cut, copying and pasting.
  5. Undo & Redo - This video shows you how you can undo something you no longer need and how to use the redo command to bring changes back.

  1. Zoom Control - Here you will learn where to find and how you can use the Zoom command to zoom in and out of sections in your worksheet. You will also learn about the Selection option which allows you to view only certain parts of your worksheet.
  2. Views - The Views section teaches you how you can use the 3 different options to view your page and how they each work.
  3. Resize Rows and Columns - In this section you will learn how you can resize a row and column if your text or entry is too large for the cell. You will also learn how to use the AutoFit feature so that Excel will make the cell you select the exact fit you need.
  4. Insert Cells - Here you will learn how to add cells to the worksheet you are using. There are different ways to add cells into the middle of a worksheet without disrupting the rest of the worksheet.
  5. Delete Cells - This video shows you how to delete or remove cells, similar to adding cells.
  6. Insert, Delete Rows and Columns - In this video you will learn how to add or delete entire columns and rows in your Excel worksheet.
  7. Rename Worksheets - This section teaches you how to give each worksheet it's own, individual name of your choice.
  8. Insert and Delete Worksheets - You can view this section to learn how you can add worksheets or delete worksheets in your Excel workbook.
  9. Move and Copy Worksheets - This sections shows you how to move and rearrange your worksheets in the workbook. You will also learn how to copy an entire worksheet to create a duplicate of that worksheet.
  10. Hide and Unhide - Here you will learn how to change the data in worksheets available to you by hiding and unhiding information.

  1. Text Formats - In the Text Formats section you will learn how to change the font color of your text, size, features and more.
  2. Align and Text Wrap - Here you will see how you can use alignment commands to make your worksheet presentable and organized.
  3. Alignment Effects - You will learn in this section how you can use other alignment effects to add interesting details to your text.
  4. Borders and Shading - In this section you will learn how to add borders and shading to your cells to add a nice visual effect.
  5. Number Formats - This section teaches you how to format numbers in the cells you have entered such as having some values reflect dollar notation.
  6. Date and Time Formats - Similar to number formatting you will learn how to format date and times in this section.
  7. Custom Formats - Here you will learn how to create custom and special formats to your cells like zip code and social security number format.
  8. Format Painter - This section teaches you how to use the Format Painter feature in Microsoft Excel to match the formatting from one cell or text to a different one.
  9. AutoFormat - In the AutoFormat section you will learn how you can use the AutoFormat feature to save time on formatting a worksheet.
  10. Conditional Formatting - In this video you will learn how Conditional Formatting can help you format a cell to specified criteria if it meets conditions you select.
  11. Styles - In the Styles section you will learn how to use styles for quick and easy group-formatting to cells or group of cells.

  1. Formula Structure - This section goes over how to do calculations of values in your worksheet using Microsoft Excel formulas.
  2. Operators - In the Operators section you will learn how the operators are represented and used in formulas such as using “/” as the divided by sign.
  3. Creating Formulas - Here you will learn how to combine formula structure with operators to create full calculations with formulas from Microsoft Excel.
  4. Autofill Formulas - This video shows you how to use Microsoft Excel's Autofill Formula feature to select the cells that are to be calculated for a formula quickly and easily.
  5. Autosum - This section teaches you how to use the Autosum feature of Microsoft Excel. Addition is the most popular formula used in Excel making Autosum very useful.
  6. Relative and Absolute Referencing - Sometimes when adding percentages or different totals you will see that problems arise. That is where this videos training over Absolute Referencing and Relative Referencing comes in place to keep your formula on track and to only use the cells you have selected whether you change the contents of that cell or not.
  7. Function Wizard - In this video you will learn how to use the Function Wizard. There are several functions you can use in Excel and the Function Wizard helps you determine which operator and function you will need for different formulas.

  1. Headers & Footers - This section shows you how to enter headers and footers on your Excel worksheet. The header and footer will show upon printing but will not show up on the worksheet.
  2. Print Preview - In the Print Preview section you will learn how to use the Print Preview screen to see how your page will print on paper before printing it out.
  3. Scaling the Print Area - In this section you will learn how to scale a page or worksheet to fit your worksheet to a certain amount of pages or take up a certain amount of room on one page.
